A Feeling For Every Thought And Then Move Into Action
It is not uncommon for people to think about things so much that they overthink things and
misunderstand the original purpose or intent, and miss an opportunity.
Likewise, it is not uncommon for people who overthink to shy away from, be scared of, or
ignore what they feel, keeping them caught in the loop of thinking. This can often be the
underlying cause of anxiety. Learning to tune into what you feel and be honest with
yourself about your feelings, and then moving into action, is the way towards balance.
Would it surprise you to learn that with everything we experience, we get a feeling first,
then we translate that into a thought, then we go into action?
Let me give you an example. Have you ever had a fright? Say someone came out of
nowhere and jumped in front of you, shouting, “Look Out!” The first thing I would do would
be to jump with fright…feel frightened. My thoughts would then evaluate the situation. Do
I know this person? Am I at risk? Am I in danger? Where could I run to be safe? What can I
do? You then move into action, do something to get help or get to safety.
All this you do in seconds….Phew!!!! It was only my silly brother playing a joke again!
But you went into Feel, Think, Act. The natural flow of processing occurs within seconds. It
is such a natural fight, flight, or freeze response, yet when in everyday life, we shy away
from our first natural instinct, to feel. So often, what you are feeling about someone or
something is suppressed and you lose your natural flow and balance.
When you allow yourself to feel, understand your feelings with thoughts, and then act on
them, you are working with your natural balance.
